Restructuring Academy

Faculty Sponsor: Professor Brook Gotberg

Description:

The BYU Law Restructuring Academy introduces students to the world of corporate reorganization using a variety of tools, most notably chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. Students will participate in an interactive, simulation-based program that will acquaint them with the attorney’s role in multiple different facets of a reorganizing case, including obtaining financing for a debtor-in-possession leading up to a filing, representing creditors in a reorganization case, both secured and unsecured, understanding how to value assets and prove valuation in court, and proposing a plan on behalf of a reorganizing debtor. The 2023 Restructuring Academy will be held at the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania offices of Greenberg Traurig, named the 2022 Restructuring Law Firm of the Year for middle markets by Global M&A Network. As part of this program, students will hear from and interact with judges and top attorneys in the field, including a day trip to Wilmington, Delaware, where many of the largest chapter 11 cases are regularly filed.
