1L Summer Timeline / Information

On-Campus Interviews: OCIs for 1L summer positions for BYU law students typically will occur in late January or early February of each year; however, most BigLaw firms do not participate in BYU OCIs, and almost all the BigLaw firms that do participate are hiring primarily for their Salt Lake City offices.
Direct Applications: Almost all BigLaw firms primarily use direct applications on their websites as their primary means of hiring 1L law students, and most of these applications open in late October and early November.
Resume Collects: A few BigLaw firms ask the CDO to gather resumes of BYU law students and send a full set to those BigLaw firms. These resume collects will likely occur in early November.
2L Offers and Jumbo Offers: During the fall semester, many BigLaw firms recruit 1L law students for their 2L summer, and a smaller number of firms make what are referred to as “jumbo offers,” which means an offer for the 1L summer and the 2L summer (and sometimes the 1L summer is for a four to five week period).
Application Materials: Cover letter (almost all applications), personal statement (for a growing number of applications), resume, law school transcript, writing sample (often, but not always), and references (sometimes, but not often).
Interview Timing: Screening interviews start soon after applications are submitted, but both screening and callback interviews may continue through most of the fall semester. Some firms will offer in-person interviews, but most interviews are done virtually.
Timing of Job Offers: Most BigLaw firms will not make offers (whether they are 1L summer, 2L summer, or jumbo summer offers) to 1L law students until after fall semester grades are released (which is typically at the end of the second week of January). A few Texas law firms will make offers before 1L grades are released. The offers made by BigLaw firms will typically remain open for two weeks or less.

2L Summer Timeline / Information

Direct Applications: Almost all BigLaw firms primarily use direct applications on their websites during the fall semester of the 1L year as their primary means of hiring BYU law students for 2L summers, and most of these applications open in late October and early November of the fall semester.
OCIs: A few BigLaw firms with offices in Salt Lake City participate in Fall OCIs for hiring their 2L summer associates.
OCI Application Timing: OCI applications typically open shortly after the end of 1L winter semester and close in early-to-mid-July. OCI interviews occur during the OCI period, typically starting in the second week of August. Because most interviews are in person on campus, students wishing to participate should plan to be on campus during the OCI period.
Application Materials: Cover letter, resume, law school transcript, writing sample (often, but not always), references (sometimes, but not always).
Screening Interview Timing
- Direct application screening interviews will start soon after applications are submitted, but screening interviews may continue through most of the fall semester. Some firms will offer in-person interviews, but most screening interviews are done virtually.
- OCI screening interviews occur during the OCI period on campus or virtually as designated in the application posted in LINX.
Callback Interview Timing
- Direct application callback interviews may be combined with the screening interviews, but a growing number of firms are conducting callback interviews (some in person and some virtually) shortly after the screening interviews.
- OCI callback interviews are typically seven to ten days after the OCI screening interview, and most of those callback interviews will be in person.
Timing of Job Offers
- Offers from direct applications (whether they are 1L summer, 2L summer, or jumbo summer offers) will not typically be made to 1L law students until after fall semester grades are released (which is typically at the end of the second week of January). A few Texas law firms may make offers before 1L grades are released. The offers made by BigLaw firms will typically remain open for two weeks or less.
- Offers from OCI callback interviews are typical made within seven to ten days after the callback interview.

3L or Graduate Timeline / Information

Very Few Jobs: BigLaw firms typically do not hire 3L law students because their new associate classes are filled with 2L summer interns or associates.
Early Resume Collect, OCI, and Online Applications: Firms hiring 3Ls for post-graduate positions will typically accept online applications, but on occasion, will participate in Early Resume Collect or OCI programs.
Early Resume Collect Application Timing: Early Resume Collect applications for individual law firms typically open in May or June. The applications for individual law firms will close starting in mid-June, but some law firms will wait until early in July. Applications should be submitted as soon as 2L winter grades are available.
OCI Application Timing: OCI applications typically open shortly after end of 2L winter semester and close early in July. Applications should be submitted as soon as 2L winter grades are available.
Online Applications Timing: Online applications typically open later in the summer (when firms realize they will not fill all positions from 2L summer interns or associates); however, they can open literally at any time. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible after the positions open.
Application Materials: Cover letter, resume, law school transcript, writing sample (often, but not always), references (sometimes, but not always).
Screening Interview Timing
- Early Resume Collect screening interviews for a law firm will occur within one to two weeks after the deadline for that law firm’s resume collect.
- OCI screening interviews occur during the OCI period on campus or virtually, typically starting in the second week of August.
- Online application screening interviews typically occur within one to two weeks after applications are submitted (unless the online applications state that no interviews will start until after a deadline, in which case, they will be one to two weeks after that deadline).
Callback Interview Timing
- Callback interviews are often combined with the screening interview for Early Resume Collect applications. However, a growing number of the screening interviews are virtual, followed by callback interviews that are either virtual or in person.
- Invitations for callback interviews are typically made seven to ten days after the screening interviews for OCI and online applications.
Timing of Job Offer: Typically made within seven to ten days after the callback interview.
