Laptop Purchase Information
The law school has worked directly with Lenovo and Dell and indirectly via the BYU bookstore with Apple to identify models that are appropriate for law students.
For 1st year law students, the cost of your laptop (up to $1,500) can be added to your budget for purposes of computing financial aid under the guidelines of the U.S. Office of Education.
The links below can help you determine what model works best for you.
Most default warranties only cover 3 years. If you plan on using the computer you buy for the bar exam after three years of school, you probably want to postpone your purchase until August 1. For Lenovo laptops, both the 3 and 4 year warranties cover accidental damage. For Apple laptops, the 3 year Apple Care warranty does not cover accidental damage, but includes 24 X 7 Phone support. The 4 year Safeware Extended Service Plan available through the BYU Bookstore includes accidental damage, but does not include phone support. You can bring your PC to the Help Desk (459 JRCB), or to the computer repair desk at the BYU Bookstore (3931 WSC).
The following links below are provided to help law students find the best option for their laptop needs. All of these models have on-site, accidental damage, and next business day support anywhere in the world.
Students who participate in the laptop initiative have access to the following services:
- Service calls by the HelpDesk (Apple Laptops need to be repaired by the BYU Store)
- Loaner laptops for those who have a laptop that is not functional or is being repaired
- Data Recovery for hard drive failure
- Unlimited time spent troubleshooting device problems
If you have questions about models or links, please contact the law school Help Desk (801)-422-3884 (M- F; 8:00 am – 5:00 pm)
In order to obtain the special pricing negotiated for the Lenovo laptop models, you must purchase your laptop from a website set up for BYU law students by Lenovo. For the 2019-2020 school year, the following Lenovo laptops are approved for the laptop initiative: Thinkad T490, and Thinkpad T490S. To be qualified for the laptop initiative, a laptop must come with Windows 10 pro and a 3-year next business day onsite warranty and accidental damage protection.
You should note that many of the optional components offered for sale by Lenovo on the purchasing website are optional items. You do not need to purchase these optional items in order to qualify for Help Desk hardware and software support.
Laptops are also available from Dell at a discounted price. To recieve the discount, you must purchase the laptop from the link below. For the 2017-2018 school year, the following Dell laptops are approved for the laptop initiative: XPS 9370, Latitude 7490.
For the 2019/2020 academic year, we will support Apple MacBook Pro 13” retina display laptop.
The BYU bookstore sells MacBook Pros. You can follow the link below to the book store sales page. There are two major benefits from purchasing from BYU Bookstore. The first is that you may be eligible to pay no sales tax. The second is that BYU offers an extended warranty that is less expensive than AppleCare, with better coverage. This warranty is currently not available online, but can be purchased in store.
