David Dutcher

David Dutcher currently serves as Senior Director, Intellectual Property at SanDisk Corporation, where he leads SanDisk's patent team. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. Prior to SanDisk, David served as Associate General Counsel and Vice President, Intellectual Property, at Fusion-io, reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, where he had worldwide responsibility for the company’s IP matters, including IP strategy, IP litigation, patent and trademark portfolio development and protection, open source, IP policy, M&A IP support, and standards.In addition, David played a key role for the company in other legal matters, including managing litigation, handling employment matters, and preparing and negotiating commercial agreements, inbound and outbound licensing contracts, vendor contracts, and strategic partnership agreements. He also helped guide Fusion-io through its merger with SanDisk (valued at approximately $1.3B) in July 2014. David joined Fusion-io from Intellectual Ventures, an invention capital company with over $6B in assets.At Intellectual Ventures, David was Head of Prosecution and Asset Management, where he led the prosecution team of 19 patent professionals and was responsible for all aspects of enhancing and maintaining Intellectual Ventures’ acquired global patent portfolio (30k+ assets), including patent prosecution, post-grant proceedings, portfolio strategy, patent acquisition due diligence, and strategic planning. Prior to Intellectual Ventures, David was an attorney at Perkins Coie in Seattle, where he prepared and prosecuted patent applications, drafted non-infringement and invalidity opinions, conducted due diligence, and advised clients on IP matters. David received his juris doctorate degree from Harvard Law School and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, summa cum laude, from Brigham Young University. He was also an editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology.
