On March 20, BYU Law hosted its annual Barristers’ Ball and Award Banquet, where students and faculty are recognized for their outstanding efforts to uphold the Law School’s virtues of academic achievement and dedication to service.
Awards ranged from International Center for Law and Religion Studies Outstanding Service Award to Faculty Awards for Meritorious Achievement and Distinguished Service. Several awards from BYU Law supporters were also awarded, including the Christensen Memorial Award for Excellence in Advocacy, which was given to Joshua Wilkinson, the Schooley Outstanding Mediator Award, awarded to Tyler Brown, and the John S. Welch Award for Outstanding Legal Writing, first place given to Robert Patterson.
The National Association of Women Lawyers recognized Hannah Marchant for her academic achievement, motivation, and contributions to the advancement of women in society, and the Utah State Bar Division of Litigation recognized last semester’s Linda Anderson Trial Advocacy winners, Shannon Sorenson and Joshua Wilkinson, as well as runners-up Ashley Bertoldo and Garrett Messerly.
Dean James Rasband announced the winners of the J. Reuben Clark Award to Luke Bell, Brooke Ellis, Victoria Chen, Zachary Smith, Sarah Jenkins, and Chase Thomas. He also awarded the Humor in the Law Award to Grant Walton Arnold, who offered a brief acceptance speech.
SBA President Anthony Loubet was also able to present the student choice awards: the 1L Professor Award to Brigham Daniels; the 2L/3L Professor Award to Eric Jensen; the SBA Distinguished Service Award to GaeLynn Kuchar; the Exceptional Service to the SBA Award to Wendy Archibald; and the SBA President’s Award to Whitney Nelson.
Once the awards had been distributed, the Barristers Ball proper began, where the Law School community was welcomed to the dance floor and adjacent photo area.
