November 13, 2018

Several BYU Law faculty members participated in the 2015 annual meeting for the American Association of Law Schools (AALS), January 2-5 in Washington, D.C. This year’s theme was “Legal Education at the Crossroads.”

Faculty members RonNell Andersen Jones, Christine Hurt, Brett Scharffs, and Gordon Smith serve on section boards. Professor Jones is a member of the executive board for the section on Mass Communications in the Law; Professor Hurt is the incoming chair of the section on Securities Regulations; Professor Scharffs is chair of the section on Law and Interpretation; and Professor Smith was named chair-elect of the Transactional Law and Skills section.

Professor Scharffs moderated a panel featuring 7th Circuit Judge Richard Posner and Professor Stanley Fish, which revisited their debates from 25 years ago about the use and abuse of literary theory in the interpretation of legal texts, the role of intent in interpretation, and the possibility of calling an interpretation correct.
