LeConte Stewart was an American Latter-day Saint artist known for his landscapes of Utah. Working with multiple mediums, Stewart created unidealized, yet stunning works, especially of rural Utah. Centerville Mountain encompasses the beauty of the changing leaves and exhibits the remarkable landscapes in Utah. Through rich oranges, yellows, and reds, Stewart has beautifully depicted Hogback Mountain during Autumn in Utah, a delightful season to experience.

Private Car by LeConte Stewart is a naturalistic depiction of a group of men stationed along cars of a train as it travels through a beautiful landscape. Though symbolizing migrant workers during the Great Depression, Stewart adopts a bright palette, seemingly creating a sense of contentment and ease. The men, though tired from their travels, sit happily on the train car, looking out to the open field. Through this painting, Stewart seemingly creates a scene full of hope and beauty during such a dark moment in history.

A Grey Day in Winter

Oil on panel, c. 1930

A Grey Day in Winter by LeConte Stewart is a naturalistic, yet impressionistic-like painting of a small town on a cold winters day. Through loose brushstrokes, meaning the strokes of the paintbrush are visible on the canvas, Stewart presents a pleasant winter day as fresh snow settles on a quaint town. With cooler tones of blue, purple, and grey, as well as a lone individual, Stewart enhances the cold one feels during the winter.
