Definition of a Credit Hour

A “credit hour” awarded toward graduation represents an amount of work that reasonably approximates:

(a) Courses.

(i) 55 minutes of direct faculty instruction per week for 14 weeks or the equivalent amount of work over a different period. Time devoted to taking a required examination counts toward fulfillment of this requirement.
(ii) At least two hours and 10 minutes of out-of-class student work per week for 14 weeks or the equivalent amount of work over a different period. Time devoted to studying for a required examination counts toward fulfillment of this requirement.

(b) Clinics, Clinical Alliances, and Externships. Clinics require at least 42.5 hours of student work per credit and clinical alliances and externships require at least 45 hours of student work per credit, including time spent working on cases, projects, simulations, and preparing for a weekly seminar.

(d) Other Academic Work. Other academic activities such as journal and other academic work leading to the award of credit require at least 42.5 hours of student work per credit. Directed research requires at least 50 hours of student work per credit.
