The following externship opportunities are available to BYU Law students:

Domestic Self-Initiated Externship
1. Availability—Available during the summer following 1L and 2L year, also available in a fall or winter semester if the applicant has previously completed a Clinical Alliance in the same placement category.
2. Description—More externships for BYU law students fall into this category than any other category. This is a placement that the applicant arranges with a practitioner the applicant either already knows or finds through networking efforts or direct application. The Historical Experiential Learning lists are an excellent source of information on where students have externed in the past. Any student can access the Historical Experiential Learning lists in the LINX Resource Library.

International Self-Initiated Externship
1. Availability—Available only during the summer and not during the school year unless the student is in a non-US city and participating in BYU Law School’s Global Law Seminar programs.
2. Description—This is a placement that the applicant arranges with a practitioner the applicant either already knows or finds through networking efforts or direct application. The Historical Experiential Learning lists are an excellent source of information on where students have externed. Any student can access the database here: Historical Experiential Learning. Students may initiate and secure their own international placement.
3. Special Note: For 1L Students, a travel stipend is available to help cover a majority of the applicant’s airline ticket.

Domestic Match Program
1. Availability—Only during the summer following the 1L year.
2. Description—In the Domestic Match Program, providers with whom we enjoy a strong relationship agree to accept a student in their offices for four weeks during the summer. Students may apply to up to ten matched externship placement providers. When applying, each applicant is asked to rank their placement preferences. Placement providers will review the applicants’ resumes and will also rank the applicants they would like to have placed in their office. The Career Development Office will then match students with a placement. If matched, the applicant is committed to working 135 hours in the placement.
3. Special Notes—A student application to this program constitutes a commitment to participate if matched; a student may not decline a match or withdraw from the program. Grades or class rank are not included on resumes for this program. A student cannot apply for both the Domestic Match Program and the International Match Program, and rather, must pick one.
4. Application—Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, and application form in LINX. The deadline for applying for this program is typically in February. Students who receive a match must then complete the approval process outlined in Externship and Clinical Alliance Application, Petition, and Approval Process.
International Match Program
1. Availability—Only during the summer following the 1L year.
2. Description—Spend four weeks in a foreign country working at a law firm for law school credit. Applicants must list, in order of preference, at least three countries where the applicant would be willing to travel. Students should review the Travel Restrictions list for updated information on BYU’s advisory and approval for travel to specific countries. We make every effort to find a placement in one of the preferred countries listed on the application.
  It is recommended that the applicant have language skills related to the countries requested; however, with a few exceptions, fluency in the non-US language is not required. However, applicants may not request Spanish-speaking or Portuguese-speaking countries unless the applicant speaks Spanish or Portuguese, respectively.
  Once matched, the applicant is committed to working 135 hours in the placement.
3. Special Notes
  1. Student application to this program constitutes a commitment to participate, which means a student may not decline a match or withdraw from the program.
  2. Grades or class rank are not included on resumes for this program.
  3. An applicant cannot apply for both the International Match Program and the Domestic Match Program.

4. Application—Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, and application form in LINX. The deadline for applying for this program is typically in late January. Corporate Counsel Match Program
1. Availability—Only during the summer following the 1L year.
2. Description—In the Corporate Counsel Match Program, non-law firm employers with whom we enjoy a strong relationship agree to accept a student in their in-house legal office for four weeks during the summer. When applying, each applicant is asked to rank the applicant’s placement preferences. Placement providers will review and rank the applications they receive. The Career Development Office will then match students with a placement. Once matched, the applicant is committed to working 135 hours in the placement.

4. Application—Details on how to apply for Corporate Counsel Match program are forthcoming. The deadline for applications is typically in early March. Students who receive a match must then complete the approval process outlined in Externship and Clinical Alliance Application, Petition, and Approval Process.
Research Fellow, International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS)
1. Availability—Only during the summer following the 1L year.
2. Description—Students selected as research fellows spend four weeks during the summer in an international location with an Area Legal Counsel (ALC) office for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fellows are expected to work with their respective ALC for a minimum of 135 hours and will earn three credits. Fellows spend the rest of the summer on campus in Provo researching and writing for the ICLRS. Time spent researching will be paid.
3. Special Notes—The ICLRS research fellow position is a full-summer commitment between the work with the ALC and the ICLRS. Students who have accepted the offer to be an ICLRS fellow should not seek other summer opportunities. Students do not need to speak the language where the ALC office is located unless it is a Spanish or Portuguese speaking country.
4. Application—Submit a cover letter and resume in LINX. Professor Elizabeth Clark will interview and make offers for Fellowship positions. The deadline to apply is in January. Students who accept their offer must then complete the Externship approval process outlined in Externship and Clinical Alliance Application, Petition, and Approval Process.
Bonn University Externship
1. Availability—Only during the summer following the 1L year.
2. Description—This placement is with Professor Stefan Talmon, Chair in Public Law, Public International Law, and Director of the Institute of Public International Law at the University of Bonn. Here is Dr. Talmon’s Biography.
3. Special Notes—Interviews for this placement generally take place in late February or March.
