Investigate Employment Types

Public interest law encompasses a wide array of practice areas and employment types. Public interest attorneys work to advance the common good or social interests, often by representing low-income, underserved, or marginalized communities and causes. These lawyers typically work for non-profit organizations, legal aid societies, government agencies, or advocacy groups (note that some discussions of public interest may treat government as a separate type of employment, but others include it within the definition of public service). A public interest attorney job may include litigation in courts, efforts to shape legislation, or preparation of reports designed to drive government reform or promote education on key issues.
