Alissa Owen
Alissa Owen is a seasoned intellectual property attorney with over two decades of experience advising organizations on IP topics, focusing on trademark and copyright matters. She has served as in-house counsel to well-regarded organizations including FranklinCovey (a content-based and publishing company), Western Governors University (a leader in online education with a large national footprint in the higher ed/edtech space), and various media, publishing, and content creation companies such as Deseret News, KSL.com, Deseret Book, Boncom, and Temple Square Hospitality. At WGU, she was the executive director of, and established, WGU’s first IP holding company and its innovation program dedicated to surfacing intellectual property from its EdTEch and other departments. She was the sole in-house attorney at FranklinCovey during her time there.
Alissa has managed extensive domestic and foreign trademark and copyright portfolios for these organizations, overseeing trademark prosecution, management, maintenance, and litigation, as well as the protection of copyrightable assets. She advises on all areas of intellectual property, including trade dress, trade secrets, UDRP proceedings, cease-and-desist enforcement, and IP asset protection.
With a background in engineering, Alissa brings a unique technical perspective to her legal work, particularly at the intersection of emerging technologies and the law, including artificial intelligence. Named a Corporate Counsel Honoree by Utah Business in 2019, she is known for her practical, solutions-oriented approach to complex legal challenges, likening her work to that of an ER doctor—addressing urgent legal issues to prevent long-term harm.
Alissa joined the BYU Law School faculty as an adjunct professor in Fall 2025, where she teaches skills-based courses in trademark and copyright law.
