"To be a good lawyer, one has to be a healthy lawyer."

National Task Force on Lawyer Well-being

Overall Wellness

Your overall wellness as a law student can be a contributing factor to your academic and professional success. Maintaining well-being during law school and beyond is a continuous and vital process in your professional development. Effective lawyers “strive for thriving” in the following dimensions of their lives:

Occupational, Emotional, Intellectual, Social, Physical, and Spiritual Well-being

Thriving in these areas requires that your needs be met in each of these respective realms. Work to foster your self-esteem and belonging within these dimensions. Similarly, seek the path that is consistent with your authentic self – your values and competencies. Finally, to thrive in every aspect of your life, you must feel secure – that is safe from threat and unreasonable uncertainty. We are here to help support your wellness during law school. If you should require any assistance in maintaining wellness, or if you encounter any challenges along the way, please reach out to Dean Hamblin.

Emotional Well-being

Achieving and maintaining emotional wellness involves "developing the ability to identify and manage one’s emotions to support mental health, achieve goals, and inform decision-making.” At times during your legal studies or during the course of your career, you may find it necessary to seek assistance in maintaining emotional well-being. BYU Law now has a counselor, Dr. Abigail Scoma, CSW, dedicated to assisting our law students maintain their emotional well-being.
